Job overview

The Cover & Absence Administrator plays an important role in the smooth-running of the school’s cover supervision, working closely with colleagues in the HR and Administration teams so that the needs of the organisation are met to address staff absence.

The successful candidate will make full use of the school calendar and ensure all future events that require cover/timetable changes/room changes are identified, prioritised and planned for accordingly. They will also develop relationships with supply agencies (for both long and short term placements) and help decide which should be preferred suppliers to the school, negotiating rates to achieve best value.

The Cover & Absence Administrator must possess an ability to work under pressure and over time to develop sensible arrangements and solutions to problems, as well as personal resilience and the capacity to remain flexible and adaptable to work effectively.

Our non-teaching associate staff perform a fundamental role in improving life chances for our young people, so the Cover & Absence Administrator will be critical in ensuring suitable arrangements for the absence of colleagues to help support all students to achieve their potential.


The details of the post are:
  • Contract status: Permanent
  • Weeks per year: Term Time Only (which is 39 weeks a year)
  • Days per week: Monday to Friday
  • Hours per week: 30
  • Shift pattern: 6..0am to 1.30pm with a 30 minute unpaid break
  • Grade: Scale 5
  • Actual salary: £28,901 to £30,193 (with uplifts for long service and a backdated pay rise once the 2025-26 NJC pay deal is agreed)

  • in possession of excellent organisational skills with a willingness to respond positively to changing circumstances
  • able to work flexibly in a team situation whilst being able to prioritise, show initiative and work independently, ensuring key routine tasks are achieved within deadlines
  • able to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including students, staff, recruitment agencies and other external partners

Hampstead School is Camden’s largest maintained comprehensive School, educating 1330 students (including 300 in our stand-alone Sixth Form).
